How to Write an Ad That Brings in Customers

Updated: Jan 20

Do you know what stands out to me the most in Marketing?

That most ads just aren't good enough at attracting customers.

Some ads are funny, others look stunning, and a few might even stick around in your mind.

But if they don’t bring in customers, what’s the point?

In this article, I’ll show you how to create an ad that does work—one that attracts customers, generates leads, and sells your products.

Ready?

Let’s go!

What Not to Do When Writing Ads

Let’s start by looking at what you should avoid.

Imagine you’re trying to sell something to someone. Would you:

  • Dress up like a clown to make them laugh?

  • Bring a cute puppy to promote your product?

  • Blast loud music and flood your ad with flashy visuals?

  • Stay super vague about what you’re actually selling?

If you answered “no” to all of these questions—good.

Because those are exactly the things you don’t want to do if you expect people to buy something from you.

So, how do you do it right?

Simple: your ad should act like a salesperson.

Imagine sending a salesperson to a potential customer.

What would you want them to say?

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you’re a dentist. Who would be your ideal customer?

Someone who hasn’t been to the dentist in a while, for instance.

What would your salesperson say to that person?

"When was the last time you visited a dentist?"

It’s that simple! Questions like this make it personal and relevant.

An easy starting point

We’ve all been there: staring at a blank screen, unsure of where to begin.

But instead of stressing, just start with a simple question that speaks directly to your customer.

Here are a few examples to get you going:

  • “Are you looking for a dentist for a check-up?”

  • “Do you suffer from sensitive teeth?”

  • “Want a radiant smile with a professional cleaning?”

By getting straight to the point, you make your job easier and ensure your customer knows what it’s about—right away.

No fluff, no confusion—just clear, direct communication that cuts through the noise of other ads.

Keep it short and simple

Look, it’s all about clarity and simplicity.

No unnecessary or fancy words.

Just a clear message that hits home with your audience.

No over-the-top show, no flashy visuals—just simple, powerful communication.
